ewH: Most people that I talk to that want to get involved have the fear of being wrong or looking dumb or not interesting
eddydc: One invests a lot of free time in it
RichHeilman: @dahowlett, mainly what I meant was a person fears being slammed about his SDN blog post not being good enough to be a blog post, or should be a wiki page instead
dahowlett: @ewH – there is no WRONG unless you’re trolling
eddydc: and can wonder for what’s it worth
thorstenster: Working in the community means working in two incompatible frames of reference. Your employer sets certain rules, value-sets & expectations, the community has a different set.
thorstenster: It’s easy to accidentally transgress against your company’s (unwritten) rules by contributing to SCN.
dahowlett: @Rich – that’s a technical detail
dan_mcweeney: There is most certainly wrong in some cases, but even then you’re learning which _is_ useful.
dahowlett: Fail plenty, early and often – better to be forgiven
ewH: @dahowlett I agree, but most people I talk to who “troll”, view themselves as participating and waiting for the most opportune time to contribute
dan_mcweeney: @dahowlett, double plus agree. The more you F’up the easier it is to shrug it off, never trying isn’t an option.

jonerp: jump in the deep end and splash around. Try shit, **** up, do it again, – make it as close to your own vision as you can and don’t sweat stats and page views.

jonerp: it’s true that many people do feel muzzled by their employers. I have done podcasts with people who could talk honestly about SAP but felt limited talking about their project

RichHeilman: I think I’ve heard that someone could not contribute, cuz his employer didn’t want to share the ABAP code, like it was some kind of rocket science.
eddydc: My employer didn’t care (in all the meanings of the word)

jonerp: craig I think even if there isn’t retribution the fear of retribution is very powerful sometimes
