13:29dahowlett: Recommend Alpujarras for similar off grid time
13:30jspath55: hello all.
13:31jspath55: NO FEAR!
13:32dahowlett: I screw it up all the time
13:35thorstenster: “What would you do if you had no fear?”
13:36dan_mcweeney: employer retribution
13:36eddydc: To me it’s not about fear at all, but…
13:36se38_uwe: Late and no VID just chat (@customer): Hi all!
13:36jspath55: Have you spoken to any corporate lawyers?
13:37dahowlett: Legal can go screw ‘em selves
13:37jspath55: They are scared.
13:37RichHeilman: Fear of being slammed by others…
13:37eddydc: lack of response and appreciation
13:37thorstenster: I hope they’re afraid of you.
13:37jspath55: Ignoring legal advice can get one fired.
13:37dahowlett: I wrote my blog for almost a year before anyone cared about it
13:38eddydc: no, about the feeling taht you’re for nobody
13:38dan_mcweeney: Agreed two classes internal and external
13:38dahowlett: Being slammed means you’re saying something of value – or your trolling
13:38eddydc: nope, was a typo. Writing for nobody.
13:39dahowlett: I took the CO2 guys on this week – got slammed – no probs
13:39ewH: Most people that I talk to that want to get involved have the fear of being wrong or looking dumb or not interesting
13:39eddydc: One invests a lot of free time in it
13:39RichHeilman: @dahowlett, mainly what I meant was a person fears being slammed about his SDN blog post not being good enough to be a blog post, or should be a wiki page instead
13:39dahowlett: @ewH – there is no WRONG unless you’re trolling
13:39eddydc: and can wonder for what’s it worth
13:39thorstenster: Working in the community means working in two incompatible frames of reference. Your employer sets certain rules, value-sets & expectations, the community has a different set.
13:40thorstenster: It’s easy to accidentally transgress against your company’s (unwritten) rules by contributing to SCN.
13:40dahowlett: @Rich – that’s a technical detail
13:40dan_mcweeney: There is most certainly wrong in some cases, but even then you’re learning which _is_ useful.
13:41dahowlett: Fail plenty, early and often – better to be forgiven
13:41ewH: @dahowlett I agree, but most people I talk to who “troll”, view themselves as participating and waiting for the most opportune time to contribute
13:41dan_mcweeney: @dahowlett, double plus agree. The more you F’up the easier it is to shrug it off, never trying isn’t an option.
13:41ewH: the problem is that perfect time never comes
13:42dahowlett: @ewH – perfect timing is a dream
13:42RichHeilman: @dahowlett @dan_mcweeney, never thought of it that way. Good point of view.
13:42eddydc: It’s a pity that there’s no reponse. Talking to a mirror is more responsive/fun then.
13:42dan_mcweeney: What costs more, the coffee or the hosting?
13:42jspath55: @thorstenster I spoke to legal about what I’m allowed to blog. Pushing the envelope (anyway).
13:42jonerp: jump in the deep end and splash around. Try shit, **** up, do it again, – make it as close to your own vision as you can and don’t sweat stats and page views.
13:42dahowlett: So,etimes I write what I think is something brilliantly incisive and guess what? Nobody cares
13:43dan_mcweeney: @jonerp +1 to that
13:43jspath55: Still only a handful of 30-second videos. (some) people can by shy.
13:43dan_mcweeney: @craig — Hilarious that the coffee is more money
13:43jspath55: /by shy/be shy/
13:43thorstenster: @jspath55: good idea.
13:43dan_mcweeney: I thought your background was meant to look like a window! I realized it’s just all printed on tons of A4 paper!
13:43dahowlett: Employer retribution: get a new employer
13:43Harald Reiter: I am not shy – just to ugly to be on a video;-)
13:44dan_mcweeney: Sun took back that guys job offer.
13:44thorstenster: Not on SCN, but elsewhere, yes.
13:44yojibee: Dooce lost her job (back in the days)
13:44dan_mcweeney: but that was him just being an ****
13:44dan_mcweeney: a_ss
13:44jonerp: it’s true that many people do feel muzzled by their employers. I have done podcasts with people who could talk honestly about SAP but felt limited talking about their project
13:44dahowlett: @harald: I have a gr8 face for radio but satill make a dope of myself on video
13:44jspath55: @harald – get a body double and overdub the voice!
13:44RichHeilman: I think I’ve heard that someone could not contribute, cuz his employer didn’t want to share the ABAP code, like it was some kind of rocket science.
13:44eddydc: My employer didn’t care (in all the meanings of the word)
13:45jspath55: thought it was 7 words you cant say on FMR
13:45jonerp: craig I think even if there isn’t retribution the fear of retribution is very powerful sometimes
13:45RichHeilman: employer was claiming some kind of IP over this ABAP code. Whatever!!
13:45Harald Reiter: Will do my best hangover video
13:45dan_mcweeney: The problem is you’re talking about fear – so jus the threat of retribution is enough to deter most people.
13:45Your wife: Einmal winken bitte für yor son
13:45dahowlett: Most of ‘us’ are pretty good at bigging each other up – that helps so others in our networks take notice
13:46RichHeilman: @eddydc My former didn’t care either, (in every meaning of the word )
13:46RichHeilman: What’s up Cmehil Fam!!!
13:46jonerp: craig one thing that’s interesting – some inside SAP don’t feel nearly as comfortable as you being “out there”
13:47dahowlett: @jspath55: body double? Max Headroom rules
13:48jspath55: @dahowlett Blag-bert toons r00l.
13:48jonerp: Craig that’s a big theme I see: many in corproate settings don’t take as much freedom as they actually have. You have to claim it, push the boundary a tad.
13:49jspath55: After the first time I stopped asking.
13:49dahowlett: +1 for @blagbert
13:49dan_mcweeney: Problem is, it’s part of your job to do this sort of outreach
13:50thorstenster: You don’t necessarily want to wake sleeping dogs, though.
13:50dan_mcweeney: So you’re an edge case.
13:50jspath55: @blag is working on a spymaster toon. Out Monday he says.
13:50dan_mcweeney: Exactly, so when you ask as long as the risks are HUGE it’s okay
13:50dahowlett: @dan – but all people who choose to communicate, even now, are adge cases…
13:50jonerp: +1 dennis and dan – true.
13:51jspath55: Who in this audience HAS NOT done their 30 second video?
13:52dan_mcweeney: Do something cool that big, or do lots of small things that are helpful and kind.
13:52dahowlett: IIt’s not about page views but about the people who DO pay attention
13:52jonerp: I went through a year at an employer where I was totally muzzled during the dotcom crash, it was the worst.
13:52jonerp: I swore I would never let that happen to me again
13:53dahowlett: Work/life balance…another of my dreams
13:54dahowlett: BTW – for all the eggheads – I have a video of JOhn Wookey talking SOME of the techie stuff behind SAP’s new saas religion
13:54dan_mcweeney: @dahowlett — NICE.
13:54jspath55: @dahowlett when does religion=cult? #s
13:55dahowlett: putting on SDN
13:55dahowlett: today
13:55ewH: @dahowlett awesome, looking forward to it
